C’était en 1973, le 14 octobre en fin d’après-midi. C’était un dimanche, assez beau sous le Chapiteau dressé au cœur du Parc de la Pépinière, à Nancy. C’était la « création », la première audition mondiale et elle est, à ce jour, restée la seule, commandée au compositeur et trompettiste lvan JULLIEN pour le premier festival international Nancy-Jazz-Pulsations. Nul ne mettrait en doute le fait, évident pendant les très nombreuses années qui s’ensuivirent, que "Nancy Jazz Pulsations" représente un tournant capital dans la grande (et les petites) HISTOIRE du JAZZ en Lorraine.

Pour ce travail de composition et d’orchestration, Ivan sollicita le formidable Eddie LOUISS à l’orgue, et préféra se passer d’un contrebassiste qui eut été noyé au sein d’un déchaînement tellurique: les meilleurs batteurs d’Europe, et au-delà, ayant accepté, par sympathie pour pareil festival, d’offrir leur contribution.
Seul mélodiste avec Louiss donc, l’anglais John SURMAN ici au saxophone soprano, déverse des torrents de lave incandescente.

Dialoguent aux tambours, cymbales, xylophones, timbales, vibraphones, tumbas, djembés et tous autres engins percussifs qu’il vous plaira d’imaginer, des talents aussi variés que les français André CECCARELLI, Daniel HUMAIR, ou Bernard LUBAT, le New Yorkais « Stu MARTIN », qui fait ici penser dans ses « breaks » à Paul MOTIAN, le Sud-Africain Louis MO-HOLO, le tout jeune Lamont HAMPTON, fils du grand tromboniste « Slide » HAMPTON et encore le malgache Franck RAHOLISON, le Sénégalais Lamine KONTE. Et nous nous garderons d’omettre les quatre mousquetaires, ici représentatifs de la percussion en musique classique à savoir le Quatuor de Percussions de Paris sous la houlette de M. Lucien LEMAIRE.

It was in 1973, on the 14th of October, late in the afternoon. On a pretty Sunday under the Big Top in the heart of the «Parc de la Pépinière», in Nancy. It was the «premiere», the world first hearing, and it has so far remained the only one commissioned by composer and trumpet player lvan Jullien, for the first international Nancy Jazz Pulsations festival. No one would question the fact, as an evidence along the many years that followed, that NJP is a turning point in the great (and small) history of jazz in Lorraine.

In order to complete this work of composition and orchestration, Ivan asked the great Eddie Louiss on organ, and chose to do without a double bassist who would had been drowned in a telluric outburst, for the best drummers in Europe and beyond had accepted out of sympathy to offer their contribution to such a festival. The only melodist with Louiss was the English John Surman (born in 1944) here on soprano saxophone, discharging torrents of incandescent lava.

Conversing with drums, cymbals, xylophones, kettledrums, vibraphones, tumbas, djembes and all other percussive things that you’ll like to imagine – a bunch of talents such as those of the French André Ceccarelli, Daniel Humair or Bernard Lubat, the New Yorker Stu Martin, who reminds of Paul Motian in his «breaks», South African Louis Mo-Holo, young Lamont Hampton, the great trombonist «Slide» Hampton’s son and the Malagasy Franck Raholison, the Senegalese Lamine Konte.
And we will scrupulously refrain from omitting the four musketeers, here representing percussion in classical music, namely the Percussion Quartet of Paris under the leadership of Mr. Lucien Lemaire.
